Research State-Specific Requirements

Complete Pre-Licensing Education

Pass the Licensing Exam

- Take the proctored test at a designated center or online. Topics typically include: Types of health insurance, Policy Provisions, and Federal and State Regulations.
- A passing score is required (usually 70% or higher).
Complete a Background Check and Fingerprinting
- Most states require a background check and fingerprinting as part of the licensing process.
- Schedule and complete this through your state or a State-approved third-party vendor.
Submit Your Application
- Apply for your license through the National Insurance Producer Registry (NIPR) or your state’s insurance department.
- Pay the application fee (varies by state, typically $50–$200).
- Provide necessary documentation, such as proof of education, exam results, and identification.

Obtain Errors and Omissions (E&O) Insurance
- Purchase E&O insurance (See below for a few carriers who offer E&O insurance) to protect yourself from liability and fulfill carrier requirements.
- This coverage is often required before contracting with insurance carriers.
Get Appointed with Insurance Carriers
- Contract with insurance companies to sell their policies.
- Complete product-specific training required by each carrier (e.g., Medicare Advantage, ACA plans).
Maintain Your License
- Fulfill continuing education (CE) requirements, typically every 1–2 years, to keep your license active..
- CE hours and topics vary by state but often include ethics and industry updates.
- Pay renewal fees as required by your state.

-Example 1: If you have never been licensed and wish to only be licensed in Life, select "LIFE" only. Same for Health. If you wish to become licensed in both Health and Life, select "LIFE AND HEALTH".
-Example 2: If you have a Life license currently and wish to add Health, you can simply select "HEALTH" and complete that pre-licensing course and complete the rest of the requirements above that are State-specific to obtain that specific license.
